An opentopped aquarium

The water surface of an aquarium without a hood can be used as an extension of the display. Floating plants and leaves produced above the water add an extra element. If the aquarium is large enough, you can also include bogwood and houseplants. An open-topped aquarium must be illuminated with pendant-type lighting. If plants are to grow on or above the water surface, allow enough space (at least 18 in/45 cm) between the light and the water surface so that the leaves do not overheat. For the same reason, provide good ventilation. If the light source is very hot, it may be worth carefully positioning a small fan to create a cooling air current above the aquarium.

The substrate consists of a layer of sand, followed by a nutrient-rich layer and a lime-free top layer. A heating cable is ideal for the foreground "lawnlike" plants, which will spread rapidly with the aid of available nutrients in the substrate.
