as tinfoil or spanner barbs, will destroy plants through sheer boisterous clumsiness. However, a few plants are robust enough to be kept with such fish and can be used to add a little vegetation to an otherwise barren aquarium containing these fish.

Java fern (Microsorium pteropus) is a robust plant with a bad-tasting toxin in its leaves that normally prevents fish from eating it, although most fish will make a few attempts first. Despite the taste, some large cichlids will tear chunks off Java fern, but herbivorous fish can normally be kept safely with Java fern.

Most Anubias species have thick, leathery leaves that are strong enough to survive a little abuse by larger fish. The same is often true of semiaquatic species, which have thicker leaves due to a waxy surface that prevents them from drying out above water.
