The waterways of Africa are home to many species of fish, including a large number of characins. This display has a large, open area toward the front, which is ideal for active, shoaling fish such as the Congo tetra. Many catfish also come from African regions, including many of the Synodontis group, but some grow too large for a well-planted aquarium. Smaller catfish will enjoy the hiding places provided by the bogwood. Active, open-water-swimming catfish, such as the African glass catfish, can be kept in shoals. Larger midwater swimmers, such as many anabantids, are also suitable. Many of the killifish family also originate from African pools, although there are far too many similar varieties to pick individual fish, and availability is often scarce.
Bogwood plays a significant part in this display. It provides a rooting medium for the bolbitis and for the anubias, which can be planted in any area of the aquarium.
Ammannia gracilis (Delicate ammannia). Bright lighting intensifies the leaf color.
Lagarosiphon major (African waterweed) grows quickly and rapidly assimilates nutrients from the water.

2. Ammannia gracilis (Delicate ammannia)
4. Barclaya longifolia (Orchid lily)
5. Bolbitis heudelotii (African fern)
7. Lagarosiphon major (African waterweed)
Bolbitis heudelotii (African fern) should be placed in the top half of the display.
