Absorption

As we just mentioned, absorption of dissolved food and pre-orally digested material can occur through the surface of the anemone, but for large prey items digested in the coelenteron it occurs through phagocytosis via endodermal cells throughout the mesenteric filaments. Absorption occurs here for sugars and free amino acids liberated by the digestive process accomplished by extracellular protease enzymes. Pinocytosis and phagocytosis carry the extracellularly digested material into the cells where futher digestion occurs. Intracellular digestion involves the use of various lysosomal enzymes and amylase (Shick, 1991). Lipids and colloidal proteins are digested primarily intracellularly, though some extracellular digestion of triglycerides has been noted (Shick, 1991; Krijgsman and Talbot, 1953). Van-Praet (1981, 1982) observed phagocytosis of bacteria and cyanobac-teria in Actinia equina, supporting the notion that anemones are not strictly carnivorous.
