Chemical Compounds

As we mentioned above, we were unable to find any reference to the presence of allelochemicals in corallimorphs. However, Hamner and Dunn (1980) observed that prey appeared to be narcotized within the sac Amplexidiscus fenestrafer forms to trap prey. Presumably the mucus released from the gastrovascular cavity into the oral cavity during feeding contains a toxic agent that immobilizes the prey. Miles (1991) also clid not observe mesenterial filaments within the sac formed by feeding D. sanc-titbomae, and could not ascertain how the prey was subdued; perhaps this chemical is also present in this species. Given the great deal of interest in chemically active compounds in marine organisms it is probable that specimens of corallimorphs have already been collected and are merely awaiting analysis.
