Filtration and Water Quality

Zoanthids are fairly tolerant of poor water quality. They are commonly found in turbid, so-called "polluted" areas in canals and harbours, as well as intertidal areas and on the reef. Poor water quality with high levels of nitrate, phosphate and dissolved organics cause other problems that can then indirectly affect zoanthid health. The most obvious of these is excessive algae growth. Cyanobacteria and hair algae can easily overgrow and smother zoanthids. Do not allow massive growths of undesirable algae to invade zoanthid colonies! Please follow the recommendations in volume one for preventing and controlling undesirable algae growth. As with anemones simple systems are best (see chapter ten).
