A more compact form of Lobophytum sp. J. C. Delbeek

Lobophytum

distinguished from Sarcophyton without examination of the scle-rites. In fact, the sclerites are not always dramatically different either, and it seems that these two genera intergrade slightly, while there are many species on opposite extremes of the spectrum of differences. Sinularia spp. are also similar to Lobophytum, particularly the massive encrusting species, but Sinularia spp. do not have two types of polyps and they do have large robust spicules around the base.

Natural Habitat: Wide ranging, but most abundant in shallow lagoons in turbid water. Huge stands of Lobophytum along with Sarcophyton and Sinularia are common in very shallow water close to shore where they receive very bright light. Large encrusting forms are also common on reef flats and at the reef crest.
