Transverse Fission

This method is common in Discosoma spp, and it results in short distance transport of the offspring. Transverse fission increases in frequency when the colony becomes crowded as a result of offspring produced by budding and pedal laceration. When crowded, some of the polyps extend their columns into long stalks that cause the oral disc to project upwards into the water current. The currents tend to cause the oral disc to turn and twist, forming a pinched point in the stalk. Within a few days the upper part of the polyp becomes severed from its base and floats away to reattach elsewhere. The remaining stalk re-grows the oral disc in a few weeks.
