This large specimen of Stichodactyla mertensii was releasing great plumes of sperm during a coral mass spawning event after the November full moon in the Solomon Islands. Divers observing the anemone shined their underwater lights on it, which seemed to stimulate the anemone to erupt! Photo: Julian Sprung

Fish Releasing Eggs Sperm Release

Spawning usually begins with male anemones releasing sperm into the water. The sperm exits via the mouth usually, but depending on the species of anemone it may also be released from the tips of tentacles or through pores in the column. The release of sperm is detected by females of the species, and they may release eggs into the water. In some species the eggs are not released, but water-borne sperm fertilize the eggs within the gastric cavities of anemones downstream.
