All surfaces that might be exposed to water should be protected with an exterior-grade paint or varnish. If the drywall through which the tank projects is made of Sheetrock, be certain that any exposed edges are covered. I recommend finishing the opening as if it were a pass-through or doorway prior to installing the tank itself. For the tank support structure, treated lumber can be used for an extra measure of protection against water damage.

The floor beneath the aquarium is likely to take the most abuse from spilled water. Choose from the array of flooring materials one might use in a bathroom. Sheet vinyl, vinyl tile, and ceramic tile are all good options.
