Inspiration from Nature

Throughout this book, I emphasize the value of taking inspiration from natural habitats to create aquarium habitats. This, however, should not limit us solely to combinations of fishes and corals from the same geographic region. Creating a harmonious aquarium community lies in selecting fishes and other organisms for the ecological roles they play. For example, the Indo-Pacific species of Pseudochromis can substitute for the Atlantic-Caribbean royal gramma. These fishes inhabit similar environments and fulfill similar ecological roles. Dozens of other examples can be found.
