Live Sand

Live sand is analogous to live rock in that it is harvested from the sea and contains a natural population of beneficial small organisms. Simply placing a layer of coarse sand on the bottom of the aquarium and allowing it to develop a population of bacteria, worms, and microcrustaceans appears to be all that is necessary for enhancing the microbial community of the minireef. Use a small amount of live sand as a source of seed organisms to colonize the new sand bed. Some hobbyists prefer to hasten the seeding process by using live sand for all of the substrate. A live sand bed, together with live rock, may facilitate the important process of denitrification, nitrate removal by bacterial activity.
