Stick to the stocking recommendations made in this book, and you should have no problems with overcrowding. Too many fish in too small a tank leads to water pollution because the biofiltration system is overtaxed. Pollution rapidly leads to stress. Crowding also increases the likelihood of aggression among the fish. Many species need sufficient space, or they may not remain peaceable toward their tank mates. Fighting is also stressful, and may leave the weaker fish injured, inviting disease.
