Overfeeding

Overfeeding not only wastes food but also leads to the accumulation of uneaten food in the tank. This material decays, adding to the load on the biological filter. In effect, overfeeding creates the same undesirable condition as overcrowding: not enough capacity to meet the demand placed on the filter. Pollutants therefore accumulate to the detriment of the fish. Uneaten food is a major source of dissolved organic matter. You will observe that your protein skimmer works overtime shortly after you add food to the tank.
