Tank Support

Furniture design and craftsmanship lie beyond the scope of this book. However, your choice of support furniture can greatly affect the decorative value of the aquarium. Most people opt to purchase a stock cabinet along with the aquarium. Dealers sometimes offer discounts for doing so. Savvy manufacturers now supply cabinets in styles ranging from Shaker to stainless steel. Various stained or painted wood finishes make matching the cabinet to the rest of the room much easier.

Despite all the variety available in the marketplace, you may discover that nothing appeals to you or fits in with the room. Having a cabinet custom built may be the only way to get the look you are seeking. This, of course, is the most expensive option. Converting existing furniture, such as an antique dresser, into a suitable aquarium cabinet also requires expert skill.

Whether custom-built or off-the-shelf, the finished setup will look best if you also install a matching canopy for the lighting equipment above the tank. Proper wiring, waterproof connections, and adequate ventilation constitute the three main requirements.

Cabinet design becomes more complicated in special circumstances. Most free-standing home aquariums are set against a wall and are intended for viewing primarily from the front. A popular alternative arrangement sets the long axis of the tank perpendicular to the wall, with equipment access on one end. Personally I avoid see-through aquariums. Nevertheless, such designs lend themselves to using the tank as a room divider. Another possibility involves placing the tank in the center of the room. This is the most difficult arrangement to pull off because equipment cannot be conveniently hidden in a rear corner.
