Other Trace Elements

Commercially available trace element supplements contain a variety of other elements, such as copper, zinc, selenium, manganese, etc. These elements are important for metabolic processes and pigment formation in the invertebrates and plants, and may serve numerous functions that have not been identified. Water changes help replenish the small quantities of these elements, and use of trace element supplements helps to maintain levels between water changes. We really don't know how much these elements are depleted from the water with time by the invertebrates, plants, microorganisms, and filtration methods. Water changes may further benefit the aquarium by removing excess accumulation of certain elements added with food and supplements.
